The Air Balloon was originally two alehouses and provided for the needs of travellers before the days of licensing. Many balloon ascents were made from about 1784 onwards and one Walter Powell ascended from Malmesbury and disappeared without a trace about that time. The Inn was next known as ‘The Balloon’ in 1796 and recorded as ‘The Air Balloon’ in 1802. It was owned as part of The Cowley Manor estate until 20th century. This is just a little bit about its history, now about what the pub is like these days. This is a typical Cotswold built pub-retaining most of its traditional style. The Air Balloon is more a restaurant pub than drinking establishment because of the excellent menu, which is available every day from 12pm.
