A cosy and traditional Cotswold village pub offering a warm welcome, open fires, good food and award winning Donnington’s ales brewed just a couple of miles away. The licensee, Jon Stevenson, stepped in on a very snowy morning at the beginning of February 2009 and has rapidly put his mark on this lovely old pub. Extensive refurbishment, including central heating, new furniture, cosy leather armchairs, and a completely new top of the range kitchen has brought this village pub into the 21st century whilst retaining its old world charm and keeping it as a “local pub†with darts and cribbage teams. There are few pubs with a finer view, little changed in over 100 years – the village cross, cottages and Church look like something out of a period film drama, and Morris dancers add much to the ambience on a fine summers day. Refurbishment continues with en suite bed and breakfast accommodation coming soon. The pub also has a gallery of art produced by local artists, all of which is for sale. Jon quickly saw the need for good food served in the village pub without it becoming a ‘gastro pub’. The chef, Matt, has been trained to a very high standard and the locals are delighted with his excellent meals. Among the favourites are Steak & Stilton Pie, Game Pie, and Lamb Shanks. For vegetarians there is Salmon with white wine and chive sauce, Ricotta & Spinach Canneloni and Five Bean Cajun Chilli. A daily Specials menu usually comprises of three additional dishes, and a Friday favourite is fish in Donnington Ale batter with chips and salad. A generous helping of fresh vegetables is served with most meals…. and if you can find room there is a selection of delicious desserts. Sunday lunches are extremely popular and booking is essential. The restaurant is open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings until 9pm and Thursday to Sunday lunchtimes noon until 2pm (Sundays noon to 3pm). To book please call Jon or Vince on 01451 830325. From time to time the pub hosts charity raising events such as Quiz Nights and Karaoke. Our favourite charity is the Gloucestershire Air Ambulance and the next event is on New Years Eve – a fancy dress evening with the theme of Hollywood Greats – an Oscar goes to the best male and female actors! Numbers are restricted to 80 and it is advisable to reserve tickets if you wish to attend.
