The Golden Lion is a 19th century free house and the sole surviving purpose built pub in the village. Originally a coaching inn it has maintained its traditional appearance with old beams and an open fireplace. Historical pictures of the local area together with examples of old agricultural tools creates a warm and relaxing atmosphere in which to enjoy local ale and home cooked food. Many successful village sports teams are based here, with rows of trophies for darts, skittles, pool and football as evidence. The story of high Bickington probably starts more than 1000 years ago, and is mentioned in the Doomsday book. Situated ten miles south east of Barnstaple, the largest town in north Devon, it is 600 feet above sea level. To the north you can view Exmoor, and to the south Dartmoor. High Bickington is an ideal location to explore north Devon so why not relax in the Golden Lion as you discover the history of the local area.
