Situated close to both Dover and Deal and just a couple of miles from the coast, The Old Lantern Inn is a real hidden gem that lies in the heart of the picturesque village of Martin. Set back from the road and with an attractive and, in summer, colourful beer garden to the front, this pretty building was constructed in 1636 as two farm buildings belonging to the local estate. Quaint and olde worlde inside, where the low beamed ceilings, exposed brick walls and mass of memorabilia on display all add to the atmosphere of a traditional English country inn, this is the place to come to for excellent food and drink. Innkeepers, Julian and Nancy Paton-Smith, have been here since 1997 and they certainly keep a well stocked bar that is well known locally for the interesting range of real ales. Food too is served here and, again, the reputation of The Old Lantern Inn for serving superb home cooked dishes has spread throughout this area of Kent. A very popular place especially with families – the second extensive beer garden behind the inn has a large Wendy house for children – It is essential to book a table here at weekends to avoid disappointment. So take the opportunity now to try their food, why not book for lunch/dinner or maybe for that special occasion valentines/mothering Sunday or just pop in for a drink.
