Detailed Information

Remember ‘proper’ pubs;  cask ales, friendly staff, open fires?  Well that’s us and more.  Gill, Ian and John together with all our staff warmly welcome you to The Masons Arms, a Camra multi award winning Free House.  A traditional country Inn built in 1779 by local stonemasons we are situated in the picturesque village of Billinge and are easily accessible from the M6, East Lancashire Road (A580) and neighbouring towns.  You’ll find us in the Good beer Guide too.Our doors open at 2 pm weekdays and 12 noon on Saturdays, Sundays and holiday periods. We have regular quiz and folk nights and other special events.  Outside we have extended seating overlooking the Community Garden and fine views of rolling farmland.  We think we’ve discovered Billinge’s best suntrap with its own micro climate.  We also have an outside smoking shelter complete with wood burning stove – oh and a bison!   Daily newspapers and even our own exchange library add to the relaxed atmosphere. The Masons Arms is Billinge’s gateway to the splendid woodland walks through the Goyt Valley and Carr Mill Dam. Garswood, Crank, Kings Moss and Rainford are all within a few miles radius and ramblers and cyclists are always assured of a warm welcome. A full selection of cask ales, lagers, ciders, wines and hot drinks are always available. Please feel free to bring your own butties for outside eating.  Even our canine friends enjoy the fires and readily offered water bowls.  We are primarily an ale house true to our roots, so you won’t find lingering smells of fried food and vinegar. However we do cater for various parties by prior arrangement. Burchall’s local famous pork pies are available on Fridays but they are eagerly snapped up so be quick. We’ve faithfully served the local community since the late 1700’s from our humble origins as a ’beerhouse’ and have a long family history stretching over the years. The Masons has been lovingly restored over the past two years reversing the 1960’s ‘modernisation’ it underwent with so many other pubs of the era.  Its small cosy atmosphere is enhanced by wooden beams, growing collections of memorabilia much of it with a local interest including historic photographs, maps and a large collection of rugby league artifacts.  View our stunning rugby league player sketches by local artist Bill Bradburn on display in the bar. As you would expect from any modern pub we have facilities including Wi Fi and satellite systems to cover all major sporting events. We believe The Masons Arms is a special place which will remind you of the true meaning of hospitality and the warmest of welcomes. With all of this and ample parking too we hope you might soon find yourself to be a regular visitor!
