The Vernon Arms is situated in Sudbury, a former estate village and farming community. Built as a coaching inn in 1671 the stables were through the archway at the side of the building. You can still see the marks in the stonewall, worn away by the leather breeches of the Ostler’s boy (stable boy at the inn) who sat on the stone ledge waiting for the ‘Red Rover’, the coach from Litchfield. The Vernon Arms crest is just above our main entrance. Across the road you will see Sudbury Hall. When George Vernon built the Hall in the second half of the 17th century he cleared away the old medieval cottages, which lined the road opposite the front of the hall (where the sport field now lies) and constructed a new village in their place. Many of the existing buildings in Sudbury date from this time. Sudbury Hall is now owned by the national trust who first opened it to the public in 1972. The main hall is well known for its beautiful staircase, featured in the BBC’s Pride and Prejudice. Next to the hall but partly hidden views, stands the church of All Saints. The church was recorded in Doomsday but has been extensively restored in later years. Sudbury Village has changed very little since the 19th century and still has a strong sense of community. The Vernon Arms sits at the very heart of the village providing great food and a selection of the very finest real ale. Welcome to the Vernon Arms, Sudbury Village.
